With the widespread roll-out of 5G well underway, there is a need for service providers to rethink voice services to capitalize on opportunities created by the new technology. If service providers are to truly deliver on their 5G standalone promise, Voice over New Radio (VoNR) must be a part of their 5G strategy.

In this blog, we’ll explore what the arrival of VoNR means for service providers and why cloud-nativity is key to delivering on the 5G voice promise.

Why the need for VoNR?

VoNR (also referred to as Voice over 5G or Vo5G), is the capability in 5G mobile networks that facilitates voice calls. Until recently, mobile operators have been deploying 5G non-standalone (NSA) networks–5G networks reliant on a 4G core. While this evolution in the next generation of mobile technology has been a great step towards “real” 5G, customers on 5G today are still experiencing VoLTE calls–and indeed 2G and 3G calls in some instances. As customers continue to expect more from their 5G experience, it’s critical that mobile operators match expectations with reality.

VoNR services work by using an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), using a 5G radio and core network architecture to provide voice services for cloud-native 5G standalone networks.

The impact of VoNR for telcos

The 5G network opens up new opportunities for voice services and the way in which they are delivered.

VoNR presents telcos with the ability to leverage the low latency benefits of 5G technology to deliver seamless voice services for mobile users.

The key benefits of VoNR include:

  • The removal of disruption during calls, as voice calls using the 5G network are not required to detour via the 4G/LTE network.

  • The ability to maintain a high-speed data connection even whilst on calls. This makes it possible to download files in the background at a stable high speed, for example. Battery saving for smartphones, as additional energy isn’t required to switch to 4G network technology.

The higher quality of service VoNR can offer will support revenue growth for telcos, by creating an overall higher quality of experience and encouraging uptake over other voice services. For example, users may opt to use VoNR, rather than VoIP services, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. In addition, a better experience will contribute to lower churn rates for operators.

Fundamentally, VoNR will allow telcos to offer an overall higher quality of service, through more stable call connections, lower latency and reduced battery usage for mobile devices.

Cloud-native and VoNR

To unlock the true benefits of VoNR, being cloud-native is key. It can deliver additional benefits to the already enhanced service, including flexibility and fast deployment, with lower costs.

Service providers need to be able to deliver voice services in a way that meets subscriber demands and needs, while reducing costs and improving their margins. A truly cloud-native approach to VoNR will help them to do exactly that.

At ng-voice, we offer a VoNR solution that is truly cloud-native and fully containerized. Our cloud-native IMS core is the first 100% containerized and Kubernetes-based fully-fledged IMS solution on the market. With the smallest container sizes, a high level of automation, and minimal use of resources, our IMS core is scalable, flexible, cost-efficient, and easy to deploy and manage.
